What is a Solar Charge Controller?
A: A Solar charge controller is an electrical device that regulates battery charging from solar PV panels and protects the battery bank by managing its interface with DC loads. Basically...
Frequently Asked Questions
- What does MPPT stand for?
MPPT stands for Maximum Power Point Tracking. A solar panel can provide different power capacities depending on the actual working point in which it is operated. The operating point at which the maximum power is provided by the solar panel is called the Maximum Power Point (MPP). The current and voltage associated with the MPP are referred to as IMPP and VMPP.
- What is an MPPT solar charge controller?
An MPPT solar charge controller is a charge controller that operates PV solar panels at their Maximum Power Point. Optimization means better energy production.
- What is Voc?
This is the open circuit voltage of a solar PV panel that results when the current becomes zero. MPPT, or Maximum Point Power Tracking solar charge controllers are rated for a specific maximum PV panel Voc.
- What is MPPT charge controllers’ efficiency?
MPPT efficiency in solar charge controllers usually refers to the controller’s power conversion efficiency. Ideally, the complete power provided by the PV solar panel should be delivered to the battery, but this is not achievable in practice because of the losses in the power components of the charge controller.
The term can also refer to the controller’s efficiency in tracking the Maximum Power Point of the PV module. This is normally called the tracking efficiency.
- Can solar charge controllers be used to charge Lithium batteries?
Solar charge controllers can charge Lithium batteries. Some Phocos charge controllers come with a built-in Lithium battery profile option that can be chosen in the settings.
- What is Current Derating in charge controllers?
Current derating is a method used to decrease the current provided to the battery as the ambient temperature increases. A derating curve is usually provided for each controller to depict how current is decreased versus temperature. Derating is required to protect components inside the solar charge controller against heat and high temperature.
